Emmanuel Alloa (b. 1980) is full professor in aesthetics and philosophy of art at the University of Fribourg. He holds a jointly delivered PhD in philosophy (2009) from the Sorbonne in Paris and the Freie Universität Berlin. Before joining the Philosophy Departement at Fribourg, he taught at the Université de Paris 8, the Collège international de Philosophie, at the NCCR Image Criticism eikones (Basel) and worked as assistant professor of philosophy at the University of St. Gallen. His work is located at the intersection of German and French phenomenology, contemporary philosophy, aesthetics, and media theory. He has been invited Fellow at institutions such as the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University (New York), the International Research Institute for Cultural Techniques and Media Philosophy at the Bauhaus University (Weimar) and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Paris. Various visiting professorships have taken him institutions such as the University of Vienna, the Universidad San Nicolás de Hidalgo (Mexico), the UFMG Belo Horizonte (Brazil), the Università degli Studi di Torino, UC Berkeley and Yale University.
His work has received several awards, including the 2016 Latsis Prize and the 2019 Aby Warburg Wissenschaftspreis. He will hold the Gadamer Chair 2027 at Boston College. Emmanuel Alloa currently serves as Deputy President of the German Society for Aesthetics and edits the book series Contemporary Perspectives in European Philosophy (Fink/Brill).
